Education Programs

The Cape Ann Museum maintains close ties with the children in Cape Ann’s public schools. They are welcome to visit at any time without charge. Planned tours and programs, tailored to the interests and grade levels of the students, are also free.

Timeship, the Museum’s monthly publication about real Cape Ann people from all time periods, is distributed to appropriate grade levels without charge. And each month, work by student artists is on display in the Museum’s Education Room. Parents and friends of the featured artists receive passes for free admission to the Museum.

Programs available at no charge to Cape Ann students are based on the Museum’s collections. A sampling of current topics includes:

Skylight – Fitz Henry Lane
Time to Play – 19th century toys and games
Man of Iron – Howard Blackburn
Author Extraordinaire – Virginia Lee Burton
This Old House – Sea captain Elias Davis and his house
Tools of the Trade – Cape Ann’s quarrying industry
With Chisel in Hand – Cape Ann’s sculptors
Port of Gloucester – Gloucester’s fishing industry
Telling a Painting’s Story – Artists of Cape Ann

Programs can be custom-designed to meet the needs of a particular student group.

Young at Art invites children 3 to 5 years of age to visit and explore the Museum. Programs include a welcome and introduction to the Museum, a close-up look at a gallery exhibit and an age appropriate story. Each hour-long session concludes with an art activity in the Education Room. Young at Art is offered on selected Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Each child must be accompanied by an adult.

All of these Museum programs are available to students outside Cape Ann for a nominal fee.
