Ars Longa, Vita Brevis: Rockport Artists in the 1930s

Notwithstanding the Depression - or perhaps, in defiance of
the Depression - the Rockport art scene of the 1930s was a vibrant and
spirited one. A new generation of artists, among them Jon Corbino, Sam
Hershey, Erma Wheeler, and Sidney Raynes, were emerging on the scene. With
the world spinning seemingly out of control, artists drew strength from
their friendships, as well as from the Roosevelt administration's positive
stance on the arts, which provided much needed work through federally
backed projects, and assured artists across the country that their work
was indeed important.

This exhibition of approximately 40 paintings and works on
paper, recent gifts to the Museum by the late Robert and Elizabeth French,
include work by John Sloan, Frank Duveneck, Milton Avery, and Marsden
Hartley.

300th Anniversary Programs

The Museum's historic
White-Ellery House (1710-2010) is located at 245 Washington Street, just
off the Grant Circle Rotary at the gateway to Gloucester. The House will
be open to the public as part of the 17th Century Saturdays program
sponsored by Essex County National Heritage Commission.
Hours of operation are Saturdays: June 3, July 3, August 7, September
4, and October 2 11:00 a.m.
to 3:00 p.m.
Unless otherwise noted, the House is open by appointment only.

A drop in program for families on the second Saturday of every month.
